Canva can edit text in an image. Here is where it stops.

Grab Text turns writing inside a picture into Canva text boxes. That is the right answer for a lot of jobs — and the wrong one for a few, which is what this page is about.

Edit text in an imagePNG

  1. Upload the image.
  2. Every line of text on it is read and listed.
  3. Type the replacement — only that region is redrawn, the rest is the original pixel for pixel.

What Grab Text does, accurately

Canva's Grab Text lives in Magic Studio. You select an uploaded image in the editor, open Tools, and it lifts the writing out of the picture into editable Canva text boxes that you can then retype, restyle, and move. For a poster you are going to rework anyway, that is exactly what you want, and it sits in the tool you were already using.

Its published limits are worth knowing before you plan around it. It is a Pro feature. It is not available in Canva Docs, in Video, or in the Photo Editor outside the editor, and it is not available in China. It works best when the text is straight rather than skewed.

The part that decides it for most people is subtler: what you get back is a Canva text box in a Canva font, sitting over the image. That is a new piece of type placed where the old one was, not the original lettering with different words in it.

How it works

  1. 01Upload the image here instead of opening it in Canva.
  2. 02Box the line you want changed and type the replacement.
  3. 03Only that region is redrawn — the rest of the picture is your original file, pixel for pixel.

Questions

Should I just use Canva?

Often, yes. If you are already designing in Canva and the image is going to be reworked, Grab Text keeps you in one tool. Come here when the requirement is that everything except the words stays exactly as it was.

What is actually different about this?

Canva lifts the text out and gives you a text box over the picture. This redraws the region in place and returns the original pixels everywhere else — including the background that was behind the old letters.

Can I take the result back into Canva?

Yes. What you download is a PNG; upload it to Canva and carry on.
