What survives the trip from paper

A sketch carries two different kinds of information and they survive differently. The structure — which box leads to which, where the flow branches, which shape is a decision — comes through well, because that is geometry and geometry is measured. The lettering is the fragile part.

So the honest way to use this is as a structure recovery. You get the skeleton of the flowchart as real, connected shapes in a few seconds, and you retype whatever labels came back wrong. That is still far less work than placing thirty shapes and forty connectors by hand.

Block capitals help more than anything else you can do. A sketch drawn in neat printed letters comes back close to finished; the same sketch in ordinary handwriting comes back as a correct diagram with labels you will want to fix.

How good does my handwriting have to be?

For the shapes, it does not matter. For the labels, printed capitals read far better than joined-up writing. Expect to retype some words — the point is that the structure is already built.

Are decision diamonds recognised as diamonds?

Shape is recovered from the outline, so a four-sided shape on its point comes back as a diamond rather than a rotated square.

Can I photograph a page in a notebook?

Yes. Flatten the page as much as it will go and shoot straight down — a curved page bends the connector lines, and those are measured.
