Why a screenshot is the easy case

A screenshot of a diagram is the best input this can get. The shapes have clean edges, the labels are set in a screen font at a known size, and the connectors are unbroken lines rather than marker strokes. Everything the recovery measures is already crisp.

That matters because the geometry is measured from your pixels rather than described by a model. Where a box sits, how big it is, and which two shapes an arrow joins are read off the image. A model is only asked what the labels say.

The usual reason people have a screenshot and nothing else: the diagram lives in a wiki, a PDF, or someone else's deck, and the .drawio file either never existed or belongs to somebody who left.

Which part is measured and which part is guessed?

Position, size, and which shapes a connector joins are measured from the image. The words inside each shape are read by a model, so check the labels before you export — that is where a mistake will be.

Is the export a real Draw.io file?

Yes, standard .drawio XML. Open it in Draw.io, diagrams.net, or anything that reads mxGraph files.

What resolution should the screenshot be?

Whatever the diagram looked like on screen is usually fine. If the labels are hard for you to read at 100%, they will be hard to read here too — retake it larger rather than upscaling.
