Separating is not the same as removing the background

Background removal answers one question: what is the subject, and what is not. You get two pieces, and the part behind the subject is thrown away rather than reconstructed.

Separating into layers answers a harder one: what are all the pieces, and what was behind each of them. A poster is not subject-and-background — it is a photograph, a headline, a logo, a price, and a backdrop, and each of those wants to move independently. That means reconstructing the region under every piece, not just around one.

Which is why it takes a minute or two rather than a second, and why it is priced by how many layers come back. It is worth knowing that before you start, so the wait makes sense.

Questions

How is this different from a background remover?

A background remover gives you the subject cut out and discards what was behind it. This separates every element it finds and reconstructs the area under each one, so any of them can move.

How many layers will I get?

It depends on the image — it is driven by what is actually separable, not by a number you pick. Simple compositions come back as a handful; dense ones as more.

What does it not work on?

Photographs of complicated scenes. Crowds, foliage, and motion blur have no clean edges to separate on. Designed and generated artwork is what this is built for.
